Shabbat (pronounced shah-BAHT) is the seventh day of the week — Saturday in the modern calendar — set apart as a day of complete rest. According to Jewish tradition, God rested on the seventh day after creating the world, and Shabbat observance mirrors that pattern. From Friday evening to Saturday nightfall, observant Jews step back from work, cooking, writing, traveling, and other forms of creative or productive activity. It is understood not merely as downtime but as a distinct category of sacred time — a weekly interruption of ordinary life.

Shabbat is observed through a rich combination of practice: the lighting of candles before sunset, festive meals with family and guests, synagogue prayer, study, song, and extended rest. The Talmud discusses its laws in detail, and over centuries Jewish legal authorities developed a careful framework for what constitutes prohibited work and what falls within the spirit of rest. Different communities developed their own customs and melodies, giving Shabbat a distinctive texture in each tradition.

Kabbalistic writers gave Shabbat an additional layer of meaning, describing it as a foretaste of the world to come and associating it with the closeness of the divine presence. These ideas have deeply influenced Shabbat liturgy and song, especially the practice of welcoming Shabbat on Friday evening. But across all streams of Jewish life — from the most traditional to the most liberal — Shabbat remains the emotional and communal anchor of the Jewish week.
