About Erfurt
Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia in central Germany, is first recorded in 742, when Boniface founded a bishopric there, and grew into a prosperous medieval trading town. Its Jewish community, dating from the late 11th century, included the scholar Alexander Suslin, killed in the massacre of 1349 during the Black Death persecutions; Jacob Weil later served as its rabbi, and the Old Synagogue and the buried Erfurt Treasure are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Christian figures tied to the city include Meister Eckhart, prior of its Dominican house from 1294, Martin Luther, who studied at its university from 1501 and entered the Augustinian monastery in 1505, and the Pietist August Hermann Francke, who preached there in 1690-91.
