Augustus
c. 63 BCE–c. 14 CE · Rome
Founder of the Principate and first emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, author of the autobiographical Res Gestae Divi Augusti. After his victory at Actium (31 BCE), he confirmed Herod the Great as king of Judea and enlarged his realm, restoring territory Cleopatra had taken and adding several cities. In return Herod honored his patron by naming the rebuilt port of Caesarea after him and dedicating a temple to Roma and Augustus there.
