Barak
1160 BCE · Biblical · Kedesh of Naphtali (Tel Kedesh)
Barak son of Avinoam, of Kedesh in Naphtali, was the military commander who fought alongside the prophetess Devorah. When Israel was oppressed by Yavin, king of Hazor, and his general Sisera, Devorah summoned Barak. She told him that God commanded him to take ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zevulun up Mount Tabor, and that Sisera's army would be drawn to the Wadi Kishon and delivered into his hands (Judges 4:6-7). Barak answered that he would go only if she went with him. She agreed, but warned that the glory would then go to a woman (Judges 4:8-9). Barak charged down from Tabor, Sisera's chariot army was thrown into panic, and Barak pursued it to Harosheth-goiim (Judges 4:14-16). Sisera himself fled on foot and was killed by Yael. When Barak arrived, she showed him the body (Judges 4:22). Devorah and Barak together sang the victory song of Judges 5 (Judges 5:1, 12). In 1 Samuel 12:11 the Masoretic text lists a deliverer 'Bedan', where the Septuagint reads 'Barak'.
