About Boston, MA
Boston, capital of Massachusetts in the United States, was founded by English Puritan settlers in 1630 and was central to the American Revolution, from the Boston Tea Party of 1773 to the siege of 1775-1776. With Harvard in neighbouring Cambridge, it is a major hub of higher education and research. Its first Jewish congregation, Ohabei Shalom, dates to 1842 and built the first synagogue in Massachusetts in 1852. Later immigration from Eastern Europe enlarged the community, which spread from inner-city neighbourhoods such as the West End to suburbs such as Brookline. Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik settled in Boston in 1932 and in 1937 pioneered the Maimonides School, one of the city's first Jewish day schools.
