About Padua
Padua, the Roman Patavium, is a city in the Veneto region of northern Italy that was ruled by the Republic of Venice from 1405 until 1797; the Roman historian Livy was a native of the area. Its university, conventionally dated to 1222, is one of the oldest in the world: Galileo held its chair of mathematics from 1592 to 1610, and Copernicus was among those educated there. The Basilica of Saint Anthony was begun around 1230. Padua also had a long-established Jewish community, with a ghetto and a synagogue completed in 1548, and Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (Ramchal) was born in its ghetto in 1707.
