About Barcelona

Barcelona is a Mediterranean port and the capital of Catalonia in northeastern Spain. Roman Barcino was a modest colony that had a bishop by late antiquity; around 393 Bishop Lampius ordained the Christian poet Paulinus of Nola a priest there. In the Middle Ages the city was the seat of the counts of Barcelona and, from 1137, the leading city of the Crown of Aragon. Its Jewish community, documented from the ninth century, became a major centre of Torah study, home to rabbis such as Judah ben Barzilai, Shlomo ibn Aderet (the Rashba) and Aharon HaLevi. In 1263 Nahmanides defended Judaism there in the Disputation of Barcelona. The riots of 1391 effectively ended the community.
