Merenre I (Nemtyemsaf I)
2287 BCE–2278 BCE · Old-Kingdom
Merenre I was the son and successor of Pepi I in Dynasty 6. His reign saw expeditions to the south, into Nubia and to the granite quarries at Aswan, led by officials including Weni and the explorer Harkhuf, whose tomb autobiographies document these journeys and are key sources for Egypt's southern contacts.
