About Verona
Verona, on the Adige in the Veneto region of northern Italy, became a Roman colony in 89 BCE. Zeno, bishop from 362 to 380, is the city's patron saint, and the basilica of San Zeno stands over his shrine. Pope Lucius III held a synod at Verona in 1184 and died there in 1185, and his successor Urban III resided in the city. It passed to Venice in 1405. Jews lived there in the early Middle Ages, were expelled in the tenth century, and returned in the twelfth, when tosafists such as Eliezer ben Samuel of Verona were active; a ghetto was created in 1599. The physician Girolamo Fracastoro, a pioneer of contagion theory, was a native.
