About Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, grew from a dam on the Amstel River built in the later thirteenth century and received city rights around 1300. In the seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age it was one of Europe's chief commercial cities, and its relative religious tolerance drew refugees. Sephardi Jews from Spain and Portugal settled there from the late sixteenth century, later joined by a larger Ashkenazi population; Menasseh ben Israel opened the city's first Hebrew press in 1626, and the Portuguese Synagogue, inaugurated in 1675, is still in use. Protestant debate was lively too: Jacobus Arminius was a pastor at the Old Church from 1588. Most Dutch Jews were deported and murdered during the Nazi occupation.
