About Marburg
Marburg is a university town in Hesse, central Germany. Its university, founded in 1527 by Landgrave Philip I of Hesse, is the oldest Protestant university still operating, and in 1529 Philip brought Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli together there for the Marburg Colloquy. The Elisabethkirche is among the earliest purely Gothic churches north of the Alps outside France. The university's scholars have included the natural scientists Robert Bunsen and Denis Papin and the theologian Rudolf Bultmann; the German Jewish philosopher Hermann Cohen, a founder of the Marburg school of neo-Kantianism, taught there from 1873. Emil von Behring, the first Nobel laureate in medicine, founded the Behring works in the town.
