About Marseille

Marseille is a Mediterranean port in Provence, southern France, and the country's second-largest city. Greek settlers from Phocaea founded it as Massalia around 600 BCE, and it kept its independence until a Roman siege in 49 BCE. In late antiquity it was a centre of Gallic monasticism: John Cassian founded the abbey of Saint-Victor there around 415, and the priest and writer Salvian spent his later years in the city. The medieval town had a Jewish community, recorded by the twelfth-century traveler Benjamin of Tudela; the philosopher-translator Samuel ibn Tibbon, known for his Hebrew version of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed, settled there and died around 1230. Its Jewish community today is one of Europe's largest.
