About Lviv (Lemberg)
Lviv (Polish Lwów, German Lemberg), in western Ukraine, was founded around 1250 by Daniel of Galicia and named for his son Lev. It passed to Poland in 1349, became the capital of Habsburg Galicia in 1772, and joined Soviet Ukraine in 1946 and independent Ukraine in 1991. Its university traces its charter to 1661, and the city gave its name to the Lwów School of Mathematics. Jews lived there from the city's early years, with a Jewish district recorded under Lev in the late thirteenth century, and the city held a major rabbinate: Joshua Falk headed its yeshiva and Jacob Joshua Falk became chief rabbi in 1717. The Jewish community, about a third of the population in 1939, was almost entirely destroyed in the Holocaust.
