Lot

1804 BCE · Biblical · Ur Kasdim (Ur of the Chaldees)

Lot was the son of Haran, Avraham's brother, who died young in Ur of the Chaldeans (Genesis 11:27-28). His grandfather Terach took him from Ur to Haran, and he went on with Avraham to Canaan (Genesis 11:31; 12:4-5). After a stay in Egypt the two men's herds grew too large to share pasture. Avraham offered Lot his choice of land, and Lot chose the well-watered plain of the Jordan, pitching his tents near Sodom (Genesis 13:5-12). Taken captive when four kings raided Sodom, he was rescued by Avraham (Genesis 14:12-16). When two angels came to destroy Sodom, Lot took them into his home. He was led out with his wife and two daughters and allowed to flee to the small town of Zoar, while his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:1-26). Afraid to stay in Zoar, he lived in a cave in the hills. His daughters' sons, Moab and Ben-ammi, became the ancestors of the Moabites and Ammonites (Genesis 19:30-38; Deuteronomy 2:9, 19).

What they did here

His father Haran died 'in his native land, Ur of the Chaldeans', and Terach took Lot from there (Genesis 11:28, 31). The text does not explicitly say Lot was born in Ur.
