About Kiev

Kyiv (Kiev), on the Dnieper, is the capital of Ukraine. It was the capital of Kievan Rus, whose rulers adopted Eastern Orthodox Christianity in the late tenth century, and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), founded in the eleventh century, became a major Orthodox pilgrimage centre. Jews are recorded there from the tenth-century Kievan Letter, and the twelfth-century scholar Moses of Kiev corresponded with the Babylonian academy. Under the Russian Empire Jews were at times barred from the city. In the nineteenth century the community nonetheless grew into a major economic and educational centre, and it suffered pogroms in 1881 and 1905. In 1941 the Nazis murdered most of the city's remaining Jews at Babyn Yar.
