Olybrius
c. 430 CE–c. 472 CE · Rome
Anicius Olybrius, a senator of the ancient and powerful gens Anicia born in Rome (his birth date is unknown), married Placidia, a daughter of the emperor Valentinian III. He was elevated as Western Roman emperor in 472 (the sources place this in spring or, by another account, on 11 July) by the kingmaker general Ricimer after the overthrow of Anthemius, but was widely regarded as a puppet and was never recognized as legitimate by the Eastern emperor Leo I. Said by the sources to have been chiefly interested in religion while real power lay with Ricimer and then his nephew Gundobad, he died of illness (dropsy) in Rome on 2 November 472, only months into his reign.

About Rome
Rome, on the Tiber in central Italy, grew from an Iron Age settlement into the capital of the Roman Republic and then of an empire that by the 1st century CE ruled the whole Mediterranean. Its Jewish community, attested from the 2nd century BCE, is among the oldest in Europe. Christian tradition holds that the apostles Peter and Paul died there, and the city became the seat of the popes. After the Western Empire ended in 476 it passed to Gothic kings, to Byzantium and then to papal rule as capital of the Papal States, until it became the capital of unified Italy in 1871. Vatican City, independent since 1929, lies within it.
