Pope Julius III
1487 CE–1555 CE · Rome
Born Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte in Rome, he trained in law and theology and served as a capable curial official and governor, later presiding as the first legate over the Council of Trent. Elected after a long conclave, Julius III reconvened Trent briefly and supported reform initiatives, including the Jesuits and the restoration of Catholicism in England under Mary I. Yet his reign is clouded by his lavish patronage of leisure—the Villa Giulia—and especially by scandal over his favor toward a young adopted relative whom he made a cardinal. He increasingly withdrew from governance, leaving reform momentum to later popes.

Rome in this era
In the 16th-17th centuries Rome was the centre of the Catholic Reformation. Imperial troops sacked the city in 1527, St Peter's Basilica was rebuilt (1506-1626), the Roman Inquisition was established in 1542, and Baroque popes reshaped its churches and squares.
About Rome
Rome, on the Tiber in central Italy, grew from an Iron Age settlement into the capital of the Roman Republic and then of an empire that by the 1st century CE ruled the whole Mediterranean. Its Jewish community, attested from the 2nd century BCE, is among the oldest in Europe. Christian tradition holds that the apostles Peter and Paul died there, and the city became the seat of the popes. After the Western Empire ended in 476 it passed to Gothic kings, to Byzantium and then to papal rule as capital of the Papal States, until it became the capital of unified Italy in 1871. Vatican City, independent since 1929, lies within it.
