About Breslau (Wrocław)
Breslau, now Wrocław, lies on the Oder river in southwestern Poland and is the principal city of Silesia. A bishopric was founded here in 1000. The city passed to the Bohemian crown in the 14th century and to the Habsburgs in 1526, and Prussia annexed it in the 1740s; the Reformation reached it in 1518. It remained German until 1945, when it became part of Poland and its German population was expelled. Its university took its modern form in 1811. The Jewish community was among Germany's most important: its Jewish Theological Seminary, opened in 1854 under Zecharias Frankel with Heinrich Graetz on the faculty, was the first modern rabbinical seminary in Central Europe, and the Nazis closed it in 1938.
