About Sana'a (Yemen)
Sana'a, high in the mountains of western Yemen at about 2,300 metres, is the country's largest city and historic capital. It began as a town of the kingdom of Saba (Islamic sources credit its founding to Shem, son of Noah). Early Islamic sources say its Great Mosque was built around 630 on the orders of the Prophet Muhammad. For long periods it was the seat of the Zaydi imams, and its walled Old City is a World Heritage Site. Jews returning from the Mawza exile settled in a quarter of the city in 1680, and Sana'a was a centre of Yemenite Jewish learning until most of the community emigrated to Israel around 1949-50. Since 2014 it has been held by the Houthi movement.
