About Warsaw

Warsaw, on the Vistula, has been Poland's capital since Sigismund III moved the royal court there from Kraków in 1596. A predominantly Catholic city, it became a diocese in 1798 and an archdiocese in 1818. In the nineteenth century its Jewish community grew into the largest in Europe, and the city became a leading centre of Hebrew and Yiddish publishing and of Hasidic and rabbinic life; before the Second World War Jews were about 30 percent of the population. Under German occupation they were confined to the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, and most were deported to Treblinka in 1942; the ghetto uprising began on 19 April 1943. The city was largely razed after the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and later rebuilt.
