About Prague
Prague, on the Vltava, is the capital of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of Bohemia. It became a bishopric in 973, and under Charles IV in the fourteenth century an imperial capital with Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe. Jan Hus preached at its Bethlehem Chapel, and the city was central to the Bohemian Reformation. Around 1600 the court of Rudolf II drew astronomers including Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler. Its Jewish Town, with the medieval Old-New Synagogue, was one of the great Ashkenazi centres, where rabbis such as Judah Loew (the Maharal) and Yechezkel Landau served. In the twentieth century Prague was capital of Czechoslovakia, and in the 1920s it sheltered Russian Orthodox émigré scholars.
