About Dresden
Dresden, on the Elbe, is the capital of Saxony in eastern Germany. As the seat of the Electors and later Kings of Saxony, it gained Baroque landmarks such as the Zwinger and the Lutheran Frauenkirche. Its Protestant court drew religious figures: the Pietist Philipp Jakob Spener became chief court chaplain in 1686, Count Zinzendorf, later a bishop of the Moravian Church, was born there in 1700, and Paul Tillich taught at its technical university in the late 1920s. Zacharias Frankel was its chief rabbi from 1836 to 1854, and the Semper-designed synagogue of 1840 was destroyed on Kristallnacht in 1938. Allied bombing in February 1945 devastated the city, and the Frauenkirche was rebuilt in 1994–2005.
