Yehudah

1566 BCE · Biblical · Charan (Haran)

Yehudah was the fourth son of Yaakov and Leah, who named him for her words 'This time I will praise God' (Genesis 29:35). When the brothers plotted against Yosef, Yehudah proposed selling him to passing Ishmaelites rather than killing him (Genesis 37:26-27). He then left his brothers, married the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua near Adullam, and had three sons (Genesis 38:1-5). His widowed daughter-in-law Tamar, denied his youngest son, disguised herself and conceived by Yehudah. Shown his own seal, cord and staff, he admitted, 'She is more in the right than I' (Genesis 38:26). Their son Peretz heads the line that leads to David (Ruth 4:18-22). During the famine Yehudah pledged himself as surety for Binyamin (Genesis 43:9). In Egypt he offered himself as a slave in Binyamin's place, the speech that led Yosef to reveal himself (Genesis 44:18-34). Yaakov sent him ahead to Goshen (Genesis 46:28) and, in his deathbed blessing, promised that 'the scepter shall not depart from Judah' (Genesis 49:10).

About Charan (Haran)

Haran (Hebrew Charan) was an ancient city in upper Mesopotamia (its site lies near Harran in southeastern Turkey, on the Syrian border). According to the Torah, it was where Abraham's family settled after leaving Ur, from where Abraham departed for Canaan, and where Jacob later dwelt with his uncle Laban and married Leah and Rachel.
