About Cologne
Cologne (Köln), on the Rhine in western Germany, was founded by the Romans in 50 CE as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Its Jewish community is among the oldest in the German lands, attested by a decree of Constantine in 321; Jacob ben Asher, author of the Arba'ah Turim, was probably born there around 1270 and later lived in Toledo. Cologne's bishops became archbishops in 795, its Gothic cathedral was begun in 1248 and completed in 1880, and the city was a hub of medieval scholastic and mystical learning: Albert the Great taught at its Dominican house and died there in 1280, Duns Scotus died there in 1308, and its university was chartered in 1388.
