About Lauingen an der Donau
Lauingen is a town on the left bank of the Danube in the Dillingen district of Bavarian Swabia, southern Germany, about 37 kilometres northeast of Ulm. It is best known as the probable birthplace, around 1200, of the Dominican scholar Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus), teacher of Thomas Aquinas, who called himself 'Albert of Lauingen'. The town later served as a residence of the dukes of Palatinate-Neuburg, whose castle still stands. Lauingen also had a Jewish community, recalled today by its former Judengasse (Jews' lane) and an old synagogue building on Hirschstraße.
