Baladi vs Shami Nusach (Yemenite Liturgical Schools)

Within Yemenite Jewry, two liturgical schools developed. The Baladi ("local") rite preserves the older Yemenite tradition closely aligned with Maimonides, while the Shami ("Damascene/Levantine") rite was reshaped by printed Sephardic prayer books and the Shulchan Aruch that reached Yemen in later centuries. The two reflect how even a single community absorbed outside influence at different rates.
