The Saṅgha (community)

The community that carries the teaching forward — and the friends who help you walk the path.

The Saṅgha (a word meaning "assembly" or "community") is the community of those who follow the Buddha's teaching. The Buddha — Sanskrit for "awakened one" — is the founder and teacher; his teaching is called the Dharma; and the Saṅgha is the living body of people who practice it. Together these three are honored as the "Three Jewels," the three things a Buddhist commits to and takes as a refuge or anchor in life: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha.

The word is used in two related senses. In its primary traditional sense, the Saṅgha is the order of ordained monks and nuns — those who have left ordinary household life to devote themselves fully to practice, living by a detailed code of discipline. For more than two thousand years this monastic community has preserved and transmitted the teachings, generation to generation, which is why it is counted among the Jewels: it is the channel through which the Dharma survives. In a broader, more recent sense, "saṅgha" is also used for the wider fellowship of all sincere practitioners, lay and ordained alike.

There is also a deeper, more technical meaning sometimes called the "noble saṅgha": those who have reached genuine stages of spiritual awakening, whether or not they wear robes. When Buddhists take refuge in the Saṅgha, it is especially this awakened community they have in mind — living proof that the path actually works.

The Saṅgha matters practically, not just ceremonially. In a famous exchange, the Buddha's attendant Ānanda suggested that good companionship — admirable friends and teachers who steady and guide us — is half of the holy life; the Buddha corrected him, saying it is the whole of the holy life. We rarely change alone. The Saṅgha is the company of fellow travelers that makes the long road walkable.
