Adoption (Filial Adoption)
Not servants but sons — the redeemed received into God's own family
Among the New Testament's richest images of salvation is adoption (Greek huiothesia): through Christ, God takes the redeemed into his own family as sons and daughters and heirs. Paul writes that believers receive “the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). Distinct from being declared righteous (justification) or born anew (regeneration), adoption speaks of belonging and inheritance. Athanasius made it central to his account of salvation, Calvin gave it sustained attention, and it remains a cherished category across Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant theology, even as traditions describe its workings differently.
