Advent
A season of watchful waiting in the weeks before Christmas
Advent is a preparatory season of fasting and expectation leading up to Christmas; the Council of Tours in 567 already attests an Advent fast. Traditions differ on how they keep it: Catholics, Anglicans, and Lutherans observe a four-week season, the Orthodox keep a parallel forty-day Nativity Fast, and most Reformed and Free Church traditions historically did not mark it. Across these, it expresses watchful longing for Christ's coming.
