Anointing of the Sick
Oil, prayer, and healing for the seriously ill
The Anointing of the Sick is the prayerful anointing of the seriously ill with oil for healing and spiritual strength, drawing on James 5:14-15, where elders pray over and anoint the sick. Traditions differ on its status: the Catholic and Orthodox traditions count it among the sacraments, while most Protestants honor the practice of prayer for the sick without numbering it as a sacrament.
