Second Council of Constantinople (553)

The Fifth Ecumenical Council — Justinian's bid to heal the rift Chalcedon had opened

Convened by the emperor Justinian in 553, the Second Council of Constantinople was the fifth of the great ecumenical councils. It condemned the “Three Chapters” — writings associated with Theodore of Mopsuestia, Theodoret, and Ibas — and reaffirmed the condemnation of Origenist doctrines, in an effort to win back Christians who had rejected Chalcedon. The council deepened tensions with the West, where Pope Vigilius resisted before assenting, and the “Three-Chapters schism” lingered for generations.
