Council of Trent (1545–1563)
Rome's great answer to the Reformation, defining a Church for the next four centuries
Meeting across sessions from 1545 to 1563, this Catholic reforming council responded to the Protestant Reformation. Through its decrees and canons it defined Catholic teaching on justification, the sacraments, and the biblical canon, while enacting internal reforms. Its authority is contested: it is foundational for Catholics, but its anathemas against Reformation positions are not received by Protestant or Orthodox traditions.
