Glossolalia (Speaking in Tongues)
The rush of the Spirit at Pentecost — and the gift Christians still dispute
From the day of Pentecost, when the disciples “began to speak in other tongues” (Acts 2), glossolalia has been one of the most vivid — and most debated — manifestations of the Holy Spirit. Paul both affirms and regulates it in 1 Corinthians. Traditions differ sharply: classical Pentecostals hold tongues to be the initial evidence of Spirit-baptism; cessationists hold that such sign-gifts ceased with the apostolic age; and charismatics across many churches treat it as an ongoing gift of prayer. With hundreds of millions of Pentecostal and charismatic Christians today, it is among the most consequential live questions in modern Christianity.
