Holy Water
Blessed water for sprinkling, signing, and the threshold of the church
Holy water is water blessed by clergy and used for sprinkling, blessing, and protection, and for signing oneself when entering a church. Early witnesses include the Apostolic Constitutions, and in the East the Theophany Blessing of Waters is a major rite. The custom is kept by Catholic, Orthodox, and Oriental Christians, while most Reformed and Free Protestants have rejected or set it aside. Its precise development is hard to date.
