The Jesus Prayer & Prayer Rope
A whispered plea for mercy, counted knot by knot along a prayer rope
This is the practice of repeating the invocation, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner, often counted on a knotted prayer rope known as a komboskini or chotki. It draws on the Desert Fathers, Diadochos, and later the Philokalia. Quintessentially Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic rather than historically Western, it has nonetheless spread ecumenically in modern times; its earliest dating remains approximate.
