Christ as Messiah

The long-awaited anointed one of Israel's promise, recognized in a Galilean teacher

Christ as Messiah holds that Jesus is the anointed one promised in Israel's scriptures, the one who fulfills the messianic hope. The Greek "Christos" translates the Hebrew "Mashiach," both meaning anointed. The Gospels and Acts present Jesus in these terms, and early writers such as Justin Martyr argued in his Dialogue with Trypho that Israel's prophecies pointed to him. This claim stands at the heart of Christian identity.
