Penance
How the Church reconciles those who sin after baptism
Penance is the ordered process by which sin after baptism is confessed, repented, and reconciled to the Church. In the West it grew from public canonical penance, witnessed by Tertullian and Cyprian, into the sacrament of reconciliation. Its status is understood differently: Catholic and Orthodox traditions hold it sacramental, while the Reformers kept repentance and confession but rejected penance as a sacrament.
