Liturgical Processions

The Church on the move — cross, candles, and chant carried through church, street, and field

Liturgical processions are communal ceremonial movements — into and around a church or through streets and fields — with cross, candles, and chant, marking feasts, penance, or supplication. Early examples include the stational processions of Jerusalem described by Egeria and the Western Rogation and Litany processions. The traditions differ: such processions remain prominent in Catholic, Orthodox, and Oriental practice, while many Reformed and Free churches have reduced or removed them.
