The Rosary
Beads slipping through the fingers as the mind walks through the life of Christ and his mother
The Rosary is a Western devotion in which repeated Hail Marys are counted on beads while the one praying meditates on "mysteries" drawn from the life of Christ and Mary. It grew in the medieval West, is closely tied to the Dominican tradition, and took fixed form by the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is distinctively Roman Catholic; the Orthodox use the prayer rope and Jesus Prayer instead, and Protestants generally reject it as Marian.
