Egyptians revered Isis as the supreme mistress of magic and protection. In the Osiris myth she restores her murdered husband and conceives and shields their son Horus; her spells were thought to heal the sick and guard mother and child. By the Greco-Roman period her worship had spread far beyond Egypt across the Mediterranean. Egyptians believed her cunning even won her power over the secret name of the sun god himself.
