Egyptians worshipped Ptah as the great craftsman god of Memphis — the divine artisan and patron of sculptors, metalworkers, and builders, shown as a mummiform man holding a composite staff. He headed Memphis's family of three gods, with his consort Sekhmet and their son Nefertem. In tombs he merged with the funerary gods Sokar and Osiris as 'Ptah-Sokar-Osiris,' a form embodied in countless wooden statuettes. He is distinct from the Memphite Theology, the separate creation text that has him fashion the world by heart and tongue.
