Thoth & the Invention of Writing
The ibis-headed god who gave Egypt writing — and kept the minutes at the judgment of the dead.
Egyptians credited the god Thoth (Djehuty) with writing, counting, knowledge, and the regulation of time, and made him the patron of scribes and the recorder among the gods — for instance, noting the verdict at the weighing of the heart. Associated with the ibis and the baboon and with the moon, he was honored at Hermopolis. Later Greeks identified him with Hermes, which fed the much later Hermetic tradition (a Greco-Roman development, not pharaonic).
