Hachnasat Sefer Torah (Torah Scroll Dedication Procession)

The communal celebration and procession accompanying the dedication of a new Torah scroll, featuring dancing, a canopied street procession, music, and festive meals. The ceremony marks the completion of the scribal writing and installation of the scroll in the ark. The elaborated procession spread through Ashkenazic Europe in the 16th–17th centuries and was adopted by Sephardic communities in the Ottoman empire; Moroccan Jewish communities developed the most elaborate regional form, with prescribed communal roles and extensive public celebration.
