The Four Levels of Speech (Vāc)
Four depths beneath every word — from audible sound back to the silent creative Word of consciousness.
This teaching maps language back to its root, finding four levels of speech beneath every spoken word. Outermost is vaikharī, the actual audible sound; beneath it is madhyamā, the silent speech of the mind, where words are formed and thought through; subtler still is paśyantī, a luminous, near-wordless 'seeing' where meaning is grasped whole before it splits into words; and deepest of all is parā, the supreme Word, the silent creative pulse of consciousness itself from which all speech ultimately springs. The tantric traditions treat this ascent from sound to silence as a path inward to the divine.
