Mashiach (Messiah)
A future anointed leader, descendant of David, who will restore justice, peace, and Israel's sovereignty on earth.
In Jewish thought, the Messiah (Hebrew: Mashiach, literally 'anointed one') is a human leader — a descendant of King David — who will usher in a radically better world. In the influential rationalist view of Maimonides this vision is fundamentally this-worldly (war ends, suffering lessens, humanity comes to live by Torah's deepest values), though many classical midrashic and kabbalistic sources portray the messianic age in far more miraculous terms. A rebuilt Jerusalem, restored national life, and peace among nations are the concrete markers of that age.
For most of Jewish history, reflection on the Messiah focused less on when it would happen and more on what it would look like. Medieval thinkers, most notably Maimonides, were careful to insist that the Messiah would be an extraordinary but fully human figure — not a miracle-worker in any supernatural sense — and that steady belief in his eventual coming was a fundamental Jewish principle, even if its timing remained unknowable.
Kabbalistic and later Hasidic writers gave the messianic idea additional dimensions, exploring what inner spiritual preparations or cosmic processes might be woven into the unfolding of redemption. These remain important strands within Jewish thought, though the core concept — a human leader bringing an era of justice and flourishing — was well established long before mystical elaboration began.
