The Netherworld (Land of No Return)

The Mesopotamian dead went down to a grim underworld — the 'land of no return' — a dark house beneath the earth where the dead eat dust and clay and dwell in shadow, ruled by the stern queen Ereshkigal and her consort Nergal. There was no bright paradise and no fiery hell; nearly all the dead shared the same dim fate, their comfort depending less on virtue than on whether living descendants maintained their funerary offerings. This sober vision — death as a shadowy, irreversible descent rather than reward or punishment — shaped much of Mesopotamian reflection on the brevity and preciousness of life.
