Omer Mourning Period — Community Variant Customs

The practice of abstaining from weddings, haircuts, and live music during specified portions of the 49-day Omer period, in mourning for the students of Rabbi Akiva (Yevamot 62b). Three regionally distinct variants emerged in medieval Ashkenaz and Sefarad: the first 33 days (dominant Ashkenazic majority practice), the second portion from Rosh Chodesh Iyar through Shavuot (minority Ashkenazic practice), and the entire period except Lag BaOmer (Sephardic and some Ashkenazic communities). This documented divergence between Rhineland, Polish, and Sephardic communities is one of the clearest examples of legitimate regional variation in halachic custom. The Taz (R. David HaLevi Segal, 17th c., Posen/Ostroh) and Chatam Sofer (Pressburg) debated which days carry prohibition, cementing distinct Hungarian, Polish, and Sephardic practices. Divergence persists globally to the present day and is treated as legitimate communal minhag by all major codes.
