Purim Spiel (Purim Theatrical Performance)

Comic theatrical performances, plays, and satirical sketches performed on Purim, dramatizing the Megillah story or lampooning community figures. The Purim-shpil is a distinct Ashkenazic folk-theater tradition with written Yiddish scripts, costumes, and designated performers. The tradition spread through Ashkenazic communities across Central and Eastern Europe in the 17th–18th centuries, reaching peak elaboration in 19th-century Poland and Galicia, and was transplanted to North America by Eastern European immigrants.
