Sukkah (Booth)
The temporary booth built and dwelt in during Sukkot, commemorating the Israelites' wilderness journey and divine protection.
During the week-long festival of Sukkot in autumn, Jewish families build and eat in a simple, temporary shelter called a sukkah (plural: sukkot). It's deliberately humble — just branches for a roof, with starlight visible through the gaps. The festival commemorates the forty years when the ancient Israelites wandered the desert after leaving Egypt, living in temporary shelters.
Building a sukkah became deeply regulated in Jewish law. The rabbis debated exactly how sturdy or fragile it should be, what materials count, how high the walls must be, and whether windows are permitted. These details reflect a core spiritual logic: the sukkah works precisely because it is temporary and partial. It teaches that security and home are not about solidity but about memory, faith, and communal presence. The thin roof that lets rain through and stars shine in becomes the point — a deliberate contrast with the solid walls of ordinary life.
Kabbalistic and Hasidic writers gave the sukkah additional layers of meaning, reading it as an embodiment of divine shelter (the 'shade of faith') and connecting it to the mystical figure of the Shekhinah. But even without those frameworks, the sukkah has functioned across Jewish communities as one of the most tactile and family-centered expressions of Jewish identity — a practice that turns construction, meals, and sitting under the open sky into acts of memory and gratitude.
