Zohar and Tanya

on Kavanah

11001786 CE · 686 years apart

Different Emphasis

Both texts address kavanah in prayer contexts, but with distinct emphasis. Text 1 (Tanya) focuses on intellectual-contemplative kavanah: the worshipper attaches (מְדַבֵּק) thought and intellect to the Divine through kavanah in tefillah, blessings, and Shema. This emphasizes conscious cognitive-spiritual direction. Text 2 (Zohar) emphasizes mystical-experiential dimensions: the ascent through physical movements, sensory perception (hearing voices of cherubim), and mystical attachment (אִתְדַּבְּקָן) to supernal realms through concrete liturgical acts (burning incense, wing-movements). While both involve attachment (dabkut) during prayer, Tanya stresses intellectual kavanah as the mechanism, while Zohar stresses mystical-sensory experience and heavenly correspondences.
